This number does not account for the number of horses live shipped overseas to be slaughtered in places like Japan.
According to data from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, between January and March 2017 a total of 1350 live horses had already been shipped to Japan.

Horse slaughter is still currently banned in the United States however horses from the States are now shipped to places like Canada and Mexico for the sole purpose of being slaughtered.
Tens of thousands of horses are still being live shipped yearly in trucks headed
to Canada. The slaughter houses may have stopped in the USA but the American horses
are still being killed after travelling thousands of miles into Canada.
This practice needs to be stopped!
